A New Generation Reinvents Philanthropy

From the Walls Street Journal today (8/21/07):

Blogs, Social-Networking Sites
Give 20-Somethings a Means
To Push, Fund Favorite Causes

Young donors and volunteers, snubbing traditional appeals such as direct mail and phone calls, are satisfying their philanthropic urges on the Internet. They're increasingly turning to blogs and social-networking Web sites, such as MySpace and Facebook, to spread the word about -- and raise funds for -- their favorite nonprofits and causes. They're sending Web-based fund-raising pitches to their friends and families, encouraging them, in turn, to forward the appeals to their own contacts.

There's more - read it at the WSJ.

Young And Old Are Flocking Online -- Time You Reached Them
by Jere Doyle, Thursday, Aug 16, 2007 12:00 PM ET

We've talked before about how the Internet has dramatically changed the way in which brand marketers acquire customers. Nearly 50 % of adults now have broadband Internet access, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, using the Internet for a wide range of activities -- health information research, product research, gaming, travel research and reservations and more.

1 minute.

Picture 333, originally uploaded by Middlesex Fells.

1 minute.

1 minute late checking in at LAX turned into 6 hours.

I missed the cut-off for the 7:15AM flight to Boston this morning by 1 minute. And now I'm flying on the 1PM flight to Boston.

So...there's that.

The good news? It was an amazing week in LA.

LA Story. Part deux.

More LA.

  • I Have A Dream Foundation
  • LA Works
  • Community Health Charities of California
  • Habitat for Humanity Orange County

Good news?  Great meetings!  Bad news?  Afternoon meetings were down in Orange County...and that meant a BRUTAL drive back up to LA.  Yikes.

...but great meetings...that the key.

LA Story.

LA Day 1:

  • United Way of Greater Los Angeles
  • Volunteer Los Angeles
  • Child SHARE
  • Los Angels Regional Food Bank (they reach HUNDREDS of local nonprofits!)

...and then a superduper cool LA startup that could be a distribution partner...and that has tons of contacts that could help us.  So cool.

And on to Friday.

Here's the thing...about LA...man...I love driving around here.  Not.  :-)

Artsy fartsy.

New_york_movie_1939Went to see the Edward Hopper exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  Terrific stuff.  Well presented.  I really love his early stuff...especially the works that he did in Gloucester, MA ('The Mansard Roof', etc.).

Ahhh...to have that kind of talent.

Better hurry, ends August 19th.

(JASON JOHNS FOR THE BOSTON GLOBE)

CAMBRIDGE -- With an Xbox that projects onto the wall, beer in the fridge, and a caffeinated techno soundtrack playing in the background as burgers sizzle on the grill outside, a dozen entrepreneurs are hard at work building Boston's next Web start-ups in a Central Square loft dubbed Betahouse.
